In the realm of bespoke firearms, few names evoke the same reverence as FAMARS. This Italian brand, short for Fabrica Armi Di Mario Abbiatico Remo Salvinelli, has carved a unique niche by blending artistry and engineering. As a result, it creates shotguns that are as beautiful as they are functional.

To truly understand FAMARS, one must look at its history, philosophy and leadership. Today, that vision is being shaped by Paul Mihailides, a successful American entrepreneur, collector and businessman who recognised the brand’s untapped potential.

Exquisite engraving sets FAMARS apart

One of the defining features of FAMARS shotguns is their exquisite engraving. Unlike some gunmakers who treat engraving as mere embellishment, FAMARS sees it as an integral part of the gun’s design.

The company has cultivated relationships with some of the world’s finest engravers. Each brings unique style and expertise to these functional masterpieces.

The engraving on a FAMARS shotgun is not simply decorative; it tells a story. Whether it is a classic game scene, intricate floral pattern or personalised motif, each design reflects both the engraver’s skill and the client’s taste.

Precision engineering and traditional craftsmanship

While the artistry of FAMARS shotguns is undeniable, their engineering is equally impressive. The company’s nine gunmakers use traditional techniques alongside modern technology. Therefore, each gun is built to the highest standards of performance and reliability.

FAMARS shotguns are known for impeccable balance, smooth action and precise trigger pulls. These qualities come from meticulous hand-fitting and careful attention to detail throughout production. From the finest materials to the final finishing touches, no detail is overlooked.

Founded in Gardone Val Trompia

FAMARS was founded in 1967 by two young gunsmiths: engraver Mario Abbiatico and actioner Remo Salvinelli. They began in Gardone Val Trompia, in the province of Brescia.

In 1975, they chose to specialise exclusively in bespoke shotguns. They quickly stood out through their attention to detail. This was especially clear in the engraving and handcrafted woodwork on their guns. Soon, that became the hallmark of the brand and attracted collectors worldwide.

Paul Mihailides and the FAMARS revival

Paul Mihailides’ journey with FAMARS began as a passionate collector 25 years ago. As one of America’s largest gun collectors, he was drawn to the brand’s quality and craftsmanship.

Recognising its potential, Mihailides made a strategic investment in 2007. His vision was to elevate the brand, expand its reach and cement its position as a global leader in luxury firearms.

In 2010, he opened a service centre in Rhode Island to support US clients. However, reliability issues at the time hurt sales. Therefore, Mihailides tackled them directly to rebuild the brand’s reputation.

Bankruptcy and a fresh start

After Mario Abbiatico died in 1984, his daughter Cristina Abbiatico, who had joined the company at 18, took over back-office management. She later rose to president and CEO.

She worked alongside her brother Paolo, while Remo Salvinelli focused on gunmaking. However, the company later faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy for two years.

In June 2014, Mihailides acquired the company. As a result, he brought it out of bankruptcy and began a new era for the renowned gunmaker.

Paolo Pelli and workshop excellence

Master gunmaker Paolo Pelli joined Mihailides in reviving the brand. Mihailides purchased the rights to FAMARS, while Pelli led the workshop. Consequently, the company’s shotguns continue to meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

Mihailides and Pelli share deep respect for each other’s expertise. They also share a clear vision for the future. Their partnership has helped preserve FAMARS’ reputation for excellence and innovation.

The Preserve Sporting Club connection

Mihailides is also founder and chairman of The Preserve Sporting Club & Resort in Rhode Island. This 3,500-acre luxury resort opened in 2016. It offers clay shooting, winged game hunting, restaurants and accommodation.

The on-site Sporting Shoppe is a premier dealer and showcases the full FAMARS range. Therefore, visitors and members can experience these firearms firsthand.

Coveted by collectors worldwide

Today, FAMARS shotguns are coveted by collectors and shooters around the world. The brand’s reputation for quality, craftsmanship and artistry has made it a symbol of prestige. Whether it is a classic side-by-side or elegant over-under, a FAMARS firearm reflects enduring creativity and the pursuit of perfection.

Probably the best-known gun is the Poseidon and the four-barrel Rombo shotgun. So what does Mihailides shoot with?

“I have two 28g Advantis side-by-sides. One has engraving of dogs and birds, and the other is all-black with Abbiatico and Salvinelli written subtly in gold.”

More than a gunmaker

Under Mihailides’ stewardship, FAMARS has evolved into more than a gunmaker. It has become a global luxury lifestyle brand. The product line now includes knives, leather goods and apparel. Each item is designed to complement the brand’s shotguns.

Mihailides wants FAMARS to embody quality, craftsmanship and timeless elegance. He believes those values are increasingly rare today. Therefore, he is committed to preserving them for future generations.

Why handcraftsmanship still matters

In a world of mass-produced goods, FAMARS stands out for its commitment to handcraftsmanship. Each gun is built by skilled artisans who take pride in their work. This dedication to quality is what separates FAMARS from competitors.

Interestingly, Mihailides acknowledges that even the best bespoke guns are not always “perfect”. However, he says this imperfection adds charm and character.

“Fit and finish is done by hand,” he explains. In this view, flaws and irregularities are not defects. Instead, they are evidence of the human hand and the passage of time.

The future of FAMARS

As FAMARS continues to evolve, the brand remains committed to quality, craftsmanship and artistry. By blending tradition with innovation, FAMARS is poised to continue its legacy as one of the world’s most admired gunmakers.

Mihailides’ passion for FAMARS is clear in everything he does. He is not simply a businessman seeking profit. Instead, he is an enthusiast dedicated to preserving fine gunmaking. His combination of business acumen, passion and respect for heritage makes him an ideal steward for this iconic Italian company.
