SGA warns of caper extinction

The Scottish Gamekeepers Association (SGA) has warned that inaction will lead to the capercaillie’s extinction in Scotland. Keepers in Scotland have said that unless conservationists advising government agencies “get real” about pine marten predation, the only two viable breeding populations of capercaillie, at Badenoch and Strathspey, will be wiped out. Members of the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) group for capercaillie have admitted the need for a trial to remove pine marten from certain areas, however no research licence has yet been granted.
