National Park defends shooting

A call by the League Against Cruel Sports (LACS) for commercial gameshooting on Exmoor to be curtailed has been firmly rejected by the National Park Authority.

In a letter to chairman John Dyke, seen by Shooting Times, LACS chief executive Joe Duckworth said the expansion of commercial shooting on Exmoor was incompatible with the Authority?s stated commitment to conserve the park?s ?wildlife and cultural heritage?.

Mr Duckworth also said that potential visitors to the park were being kept away from the area by the prospect of encountering ?groups of armed, often untrained, men? while walking.

However, the missive was dismissed by Exmoor National Park Authority, which believes gameshooting is a valuable source of income for the fragile local economy.
