Do I need the vet to see if my dog’s microchip is working?

Gundog microchipping: Is it possible to check to see if my dog’s ‘identichip’ thing is working without going to the vets, or the police. Can you buy a scanner and if so, how much are they?

GUNDOG MICROCHIPPING

Yes, they are very expensive and I cannot see the point in owning a scanner unless you run a kennel establishment that takes in strays.

When buying any dog it is advisable to have your vet give it a check up and this should also include running a scanner over it as a matter of course to ensure that if it has been chipped, it’s still working.

It’s a good idea to also have it checked when the dog has its yearly injection boosters.

I have never known a chip to fail but they can sometimes move around the neck and it can sometimes take an experienced vet to find out where it has ended up.
