Rex Fisher, son of the late BAFTA-winning TV scriptwriter, fishing broadcaster and Shooting Times contributor Nick Fisher, is preparing for a 3,000-mile row across the Atlantic Ocean. Less than two years after the suicide of his father, Rex is raising funds for Tackling Minds, a charity that promotes the mental health benefits of fishing.
Rex is part of a four-man team in an annual race known as the World’s Toughest Row. Rex’s team will row 24 hours a day, in three-hour shift cycles, battling sleep deprivation, salt sores and the physical extremes of navigating the world’s second-largest ocean.
Nick Fisher (inset) was the series creator and presenter of Channel 4’s Screaming Reels, Radio 5 Live’s Dirty Tackle and co-author of the award-winning River Cottage book Fish alongside friend and fishing buddy Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall. In November 2022 Nick’s body was discovered in a hotel near his home in Dorset. He had succumbed to a lifelong battle with mental illness and addiction at the age of 63.
Suicide has remained the leading killer of men under the age of 50 for 20 years.
“I wanted to do this row to show those suffering from the aftermath of suicide that there is a life after,” Rex told ST. “Not the same life, not necessarily a brighter one, but a stronger, more resilient one.”
