The Great Britain team of .50 calibre shooters excelled at the recent Fifty Calibre Shooters Association (FCSA) World Championships, gaining a total of nine trophies.
Held at the NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico from 30 June to 3 July, there were eight classes in total – two of which were sponsored by American rifle manufacturer Barrett – the Semi Auto and Practical. The popular competition attracted more than 400 entries from at least ten different countries.
Captain of Team GB shooters, Mike Roberts, who is also vice president of the FCSA UK, said that all eight team members performed well: “It was a great week, and everyone really enjoyed themselves. There’s always a good atmosphere at the .50 calibre events, and this year was no different.”
Team GB did exceptionally well against strong competition, with Stuart Gilbert coming fifth in the Iron Man; Phil Baker coming fourth in the Practical Class; Scott Wylie gaining second in the International Class and fourth in the Iron Man; Graeme Creasey coming second in the Iron Man and taking third in the International Class and David Walls coming in fifth place in the International Class.
Barrett-sponsored Mike Roberts came third in the Semi-Auto class. He shoots a Barrett M99 teamed with Hornady 50 BMG 750gr A-MAX ammunition. He commented: “I was delighted with how I shot.”
