Gun owners must have access to secure, lockable storage for their firearms.

Which are the best gun cabinets around? We’ve investigated some options. The law says that guns must be stored in a lockable gun cabinet that meets British standards and is fixed to a secure structure.

What the gun cabinet (or gun safe) looks like however is up to you. You can opt for a traditional, metal safe-type cabinet or you can choose something that will blend in with the surroundings of your home. Some of the cabinets below are made from wood and don’t look like gun safes, more like pieces of furniture. In fact, the police prefer a gun cabinet to be tucked away somewhere discreet, rather than on obvious display.

Your gun cabinet needs to be lockable but that doesn’t mean it needs to have a traditional key. Some use biometric technology so you can use a fingerprint to open them.

We’ve picked out seven of the best cabinets around that will fit the bill. Remember that you can put as many guns in a cabinet as it will hold securely – so if you’re new to shooting you may want to allow for your gun collection to grow.

And if you’re worried about having your gun cabinet keys stolen?

Keys are among the most commonly stolen items and you need to ensure that your gun cabinet keys don’t fall into the wrong hands. You might sleep better at night if you have a safe installed for keys, like the Vecta personal safe which fits securely to any solid wall, has police accreditation and opens with a personal 4-digit security code. £129 from Amazon.

Inventor John Fearnall comments: “My keys were hanging in a kitchen cupboard for anyone to find and I had this nightmare vision of my shotguns and car in Lock Stock-style gangster scenes,” says John. “It was then that the idea of a high security, easy-to-use safe came to me.”

What about a fireproof gun safe?

Q: Do you have any recommendations for the best gun cabinets that are fireproof?

Bruce Potts replies:

Many people go for the minimum-security requirements in terms of gun safes, but if you total the cost of your rifles, scopes and sound moderators compared with the initial cost of the safe, it makes sense to spend as much on the best gun cabinets as possible. I would recommend Shooting Safe, which imports Stack-On safes, and stock a large selection of gun safes and storage safes for rifles and shotguns of all sizes including fireproof status.

The SS16E model (RRP £650) weights 83kg, is 140cm high, 53cm wide and 51cm deep and can accommodate up to 16 guns or shotguns up to 54in tall, but of course you can also use it for laptops, jewellery and other valuables.

The fireproof model FS-14-MB-E (RRP £850) is slightly smaller and holds 14 guns but weight 139kg due to the heavy internal fire retardant material. It is fire-resistant at a temperature of 1,400ºF for 30 minutes. Smaller versions are available but a safe that size accommodates and keeps all your valuables safe is well worth it.
