The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation (NGO) has produced a Deer Management Strategy for England, in conjunction with professional deer managers and vocational stalkers.
The document has been sent to politicians, decision-makers and non-governmental organisations with the aim of helping the Government and other groups create a more sustainably managed deer herd in England.
The strategy discusses the need for effective control, plans to minimise the spread and impact of non-native species, necessary sector skills and standards, and moves to increase processing capacity and demand for the venison market. Adherence to the strategy would also help meet national biodiversity targets.
Tim Weston, NGO director for environment, policy and politics, said: “The NGO felt it was time to produce a deer management strategy to encourage cooperative working between gamekeepers, deer managers and vocational stalkers and government, including bodies such as Natural England, Defra and the Forestry Commission.
“Within the strategy the NGO has outlined achievable suggestions for venison marketing, incentive schemes and targeted deer management in areas where it is needed. The strategy was put together with all those involved in the sector from the largest estates to individual vocational deerstalkers,” he added.
Upheavals within two prominent animal welfare charities have sparked concerns about their governance and what goes on behind the scenes.
