What’s meant by barrel canting, and why is it a fault?

Canting the barrels is considered a fault because it’s usually the result of an incorrect stance or gun mount causing the muzzles to come off the line of the bird, usually resulting in a miss.

Losing the line in this way can also affect the swing of the gun, and lead to ‘poking’.

However, sometimes it pays to cant the gun and here I’m thinking particularly of rising, quartering away, birds and also quartering driven.

While I prefer to see a shooter move his feet to address targets of this sort there will be times when it’s easier to keep on line with angled birds by dipping the head and shoulder a little and mounted the gun accordingly.
