For game shooting, what is the going rate for sporting rights?

Game shooting: What is the going rate for sporting rights, and is the charge usually given per acre? We have been offered the lease of a farm, but it seems to me to be a little high.

It’s difficult to put a price on the sporting value of a piece of ground without seeing it, as there are several variables.

For example, a piece of ground with the potential to show and hold birds, and which might also have a pond or two for duckflighting, will be worth more than a flat farm with little woodland or holding cover and no water.

Another thing to consider is the proximity of the ground to your existing shoot (if you have one), and the effect it might have if someone else starts a shoot over the boundary.

If you don’t have a shoot of your own already, it might be worth paying a few extra pounds per acre to secure the lease.

A rough guide price would be £10-£15 per acre, depending on where you live.
