Eat Wild are urging the shooting sector to “make the change” away from lead shot so that game can be fed into the food chain.
Eat Wild, the development board for promoting the consumption of wild meat, have built relationships with catering giants such as Aramark, Elior and Delaware, but the firms say that they cannot use game meat shot with lead.
Without a voluntary transition to steel shot ahead of the legal lead ban, Eat Wild say that the game market could be set back by years.
Culinary Director of Eat Wild, Leon Challis- Davies told ST: “We have been engaged with large contract caterers for some time, and they have spoken out. They cannot use birds shot with lead in their food chain, it’s that simple.
“I am asking shoots and landowners to unite and stand together. We must seriously consider the transition away from lead before the ban takes place to help build and strengthen the market for game meat
“This is a call to arms for the shooting sector. We need to look at where our birds are going and be proud to supply, a school, a stadium or a contract caterer. Make the change.”
