After giving us their all in the field all day, our gundogs need somewhere comfy to rest their weary heads. Here's what we've found.
We recently wrote about the amount of time a dog spends asleep and as you might expect, it’s quite a bit of the day (and night of course). So a welcoming bed is what your faithful companion deserves. We’ve searched out eight washable gun dog beds that we think hit the mark. They’re made from practical yet comfortable fabric, look good and will act as a haven for your hound. They’re supportive but soft, warm but not too hot.
Mind you, however much your gundog likes his own bed, you can almost be sure that when you have canine visitors your own dog will try theirs. Seeing a full-size springer squeezing into a bed designed for a cavalier always brings a smile. Perhaps it’s something to do with dominance: you’ve moved into my territory, so I’m going to sleep in your bed.
Our pick of washable gun dog beds
Your dog will sink into this gratefully after a hard day in the field. It won’t slide around thanks to the non-slip rubber backing and it’s easy to clean, with a removable cover.
If you’re a fan of corduroy, treat your dog to this comfortable (and importantly washable) dog bed from Made. As well as the navy corduroy shown, it comes in five other colours and two different sizes, so there’s one for Jack Russells and Labradors.
The bed manufacturer has turned its attention to dogs here, creating a bed especially designed to soothe older bones. If your dog has served you faithfully and now enjoys a restful slumber, then this is a good one to consider. Available in small, medium, large and fully washable.
In our view, one of these (or more) is almost a must for every gundog. It’s not a bed as such (although you can use it alone), but a robust, warm fleece fabric that can be used in a variety of ways. On top of an existing bed to make it extra soft, in the back of a car, in a crate and in a whelping box. The fabric is completely washable and dries quickly. This is a bed that will be used from puppyhood through to old age. Available in a variety of sizes for all sizes of dog.
If your dog suffers from the heat, then this could be a useful idea. The bed keeps hot dogs off the ground, allowing air to circulate through the mesh base. You can clean it easily and it comes in sizes from small to extra-large in grey or green.
6.Tuffies Nest Dog Bed from £146
Robust and practical, Tuffies has a legion of gundog fans for its dog beds, which wipe clean. You can go for the full nest or the easy access nest (for less limber dogs). Available in five sizes and a host of different colours and patterns, so every canine member of the family could have their own.
Tweed is of course a favourite amongst fieldsports fans, so you can carry the theme through to your home with this smart dog bed from Hound & Yard. The plump interior cushion can be removed allowing the cover to be unzipped and washed in a machine. After a long day in the field, your dog will enjoying resting a weary head on the bolstered sides, probably keeping a careful eye on proceedings.
Dogs seem to like beanbag beds. They certainly find them comfortable, plus which they are light, easy to move and have excellent insulative properties. This one caught our eye because it has a flap which a dog can snuggle into. Available in medium and large.
