Flushing birds

Q) Are we better off placing netting, sewelling or stops at the end of our drives to make the birds flush and to prevent them running on? M. ATWOOD-MILLS Derbyshire

Flushing birds

A) I use flushing netting if the cover is thick, but if the wood is fairly bare, an experienced stop is the best course. Flushing netting will physically stop any birds from going any farther ? something a person on stop could not achieve if there is a great deal of undergrowth. However, a person seems to be more effective in a wood with poor undergrowth. A stop can tap to prevent the birds going any farther and send them the right way by occasionally showing himself, whereas, in the same situation, flushing netting would probably result in the birds bunching up and flying in big flushes. I, along with many others, used to employ sewelling years ago but haven?t used, or seen it used, for some considerable time. It may also have fallen out of favour because it tends to look artificial.
