The new Beretta A400 L combines modern engineering with classic styling. Bruce Potts puts it through its paces on clays and in the field.
The A400 has always been a strong seller for Beretta. This reliable gas operated semi auto is well regarded by shooters globally. The new A400 L epitomises a graceful semi auto.
It is designed to excel in competition clays. Yet it is equally suited to the field. Key features include all new floral engraving on the aluminium action.
The high grade walnut stock is a knockout in colour and figure. It has been subtly redesigned for improved comfort. DLC finished components reduce friction and abrasion.
The lightning fast B-Link gas system remains. The steel shot proofed Steelium barrel showcases renowned technology. The aluminium trigger group delivers a lighter pull with shorter reset times.
My 28 bore version was a honey with lightning fast bolt operation. The A400 L is no different except for the 12 bore sizing. It handles extremely well for its 3.2kg weight.
The balance point is positioned perfectly at the forend and action joint.
The wood really stands out on this new model L. It has a higher gloss finish than usual. The oil has been rubbed to a bright lustre.
This enhances the Grade 3 walnut beneath. Colour and figuring are both very good. The stock and forend match very well.
The forend has redesigned ergonomics. It features carbon fibre vents at the end to release excess gas. Redesigned panels of chequering aid grip significantly.
The end cap allows you to fit additional weights. This system is called B-Balance. It allows the weight to be adjusted by up to 55g.
The grip now benefits from an ambidextrous palm swell. It centralises and correctly positions the firing hand.
The Extralight recoil pad uses Microcore construction. It offers better comfort and stability without snagging. The open cell structure expands after firing for precise support.
The A400 L is available in 12 bore only. Barrels are offered in 28in or 30in lengths. Both feature a 3 inch chamber.
The cold hammer forged Steelium Plus barrel incorporates a triple progressive forcing cone. This ensures optimal terminal energy and recoil reduction. It produces dense shot patterns.
Up top is a 10x8mm rib with a non reflective surface. It features a midpoint brass bead and a white bead at the muzzle. Eight vents beneath provide cooling and reduce mirage.
The Optima Bore HP extended chokes are steel proofed. Each gun comes with M, IM and IC sizes as standard.
The action features an elegant sweeping profile. The new nickel plated finish has full floral engraving. An inked background adds to the tasteful style.
The action has refined top and bottom profiling. An enlarged loading port and extended bolt handle ensure intuitive handling.
The B-Link gas operating system ensures 36% faster follow up shots. The self cleaning gas piston is enclosed with a polymer shield. This reduces maintenance needs.
Gas ports have been redesigned to maximise consistency. This improves cycling with lighter loads. The competition grade pro lifter has been enlarged for hassle free loading.
It stays raised when the bolt is closed. This allows new rounds to be inserted quickly. It also reduces the risk of catching your thumb.
I fitted the half choke and shot patterns at 30 yards. I used Hull’s High Pheasant cartridge first. It cycled incredibly smoothly.
I recorded 101 inner hits within 15 inches. The outer 30 inches accumulated another 137 pellets. Total hits were 238 with good coverage.
Next came the Eley Pigeon HV load. This produced 275 pellet strikes in total. There were 85 hits in the inner zone.
Finally I tested Hull’s Super Fast Competition Line. It functioned flawlessly in the A400 L. The sight picture was barely disturbed during rapid fire.
The load produced 157 inner strikes and 156 outer. The total was 313 strikes. It is an outstanding load for small vermin.
Whenever a bright action engraved shotgun comes out I worry it might be gaudy. The A400 L is elegance personified. The nickel action and tasteful engraving enhance the looks.
Handling is fluid and natural even with the longer barrel. The action is 100% reliable and super fast. It remained pretty clean afterwards too.
It is a premium semi automatic at a reasonable price.
